Trade-offs
Poorly implemented breadcrumbs hinder user experience and waste valuable screen space.
- On mobile, if they wrap to multiple lines without scrolling, they push essential content off the initial screen. Users must scroll immediately.
- Deciding whether to include the current page in the trail involves a tradeoff. Omitting it keeps the trail shorter; including it aids screen reader users. Consistency in approach is key.
- Unlinked intermediate segments in the trail waste internal link equity. This misses an opportunity to strengthen the site's link graph.
